Magnet Nursing Program

The nursing team at the Penn Institute for Rehabilitation Medicine has achieved Magnet status – the highest institutional honor awarded for nursing excellence. To achieve this status, the nursing team at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, which holds the license for the Penn Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine, underwent a rigorous review process demonstrating its commitment to sustaining nursing excellence, improving professional practice and transforming the culture of the work environment. Only about 4% of the 5,756 hospitals in the nation are designated Magnet hospitals.

What Is the Magnet Recognition Program®?

The Magnet Recognition Program® was developed by the American Nurses Credentialing Center to:

  • Recognize healthcare organizations that provide the very best in nursing care and uphold the tradition of professional nursing practice
  • Promote quality in an environment that supports professional nursing practice
  • Provide a vehicle for disseminating successful practices and strategies among nursing systems
  • Promote positive patient outcomes

To become a Magnet hospital, the nursing team must complete a rigorous and comprehensive evaluation process. Forming the framework for the Magnet appraisal process are 14 characteristics that organizations applying for the award must be able to demonstrate and document. These 14 “Forces of Magnetism,” together with more than 164 sources of evidence, resulted in the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania’s application for Magnet status filling 10 volumes and including written narratives, exhibits, and demographics.
